CAROLUS VERHAEREN (1908-1956)
La Jolla Painter

A native of Belgium, grandson of noted Flemish sculptor Victor Ven and nephew of Emile Verhaeren, the famous Belgian author, Verhaeren received his early art training in London and later in Canada, before coming to the US and to Southern California. A bold use of color and vigorous but subtle handling of the palette knife reveal the artist's fearless approach to his subject matter which included desert and woodland scenes, surf and coastline, still-life and portraiture. Well-known and acclaimed in La Jolla where he lived and maintained his studio, he had one-man shows in Canada, Mexico and the United States and his work is represented in numerous private collections around the world.
