EX058-STUDY OF CLARK (THE LISTENER)
Terracotta
Height: 16 1/2"
Length: 18 1/4"
Depth: 8 3/4"
Date: 1963
Provenance: Statement of authenticity by the model, Dr. Clark W. Brott, former Chief Curator of Museum of Man, San Diego on file.
-Donal seldom ever sculpted directly from a model, preferring to study in clay while finishing pieces in a variety of difficult mediums, especially rosewood, diorite, and bronze. To the best of my knowledge, Donal Hord gave no similar studies to his models when the studies were completed. At my request, Donal, who was also my friend, asked his long-time assistant and comrade Homer Dana to assist in preparing this rather large terra cotta for firing (with no guarantees we would successfully remove the trapped moisture). The project was successful, however; and Donal presented "Study of Clark," or "The Listener" to me in October of 1963. -Clark W. Brott, President, Great Basin Foundation, April 14, 1993, San Diego, California.
San Diego Sculptor
James Tank Porter studied at the Art Student's League and Beaux Arts Institute in New York. He was the first sculptor student at the Louis C. Tiffany foundation in 1918. President of Contemporary Artists of San Diego, his bronze figure for the Ellen B. Scripps testimonial in La Jolla (stolen in 1995) dedicated in 1926 was the first free-standing public sculpture in San Diego.
EX002-HEAD OF A YOUNG MAN

Bronze
Height: 12-3/4"
Inscribed (left side of neck): James Tank Porter 1928
Date: 1928
Note: Dark umber patination
Provenance: Bruce Kamerling collection (Obtained directly from the artist's widow)
-According to the artist's widow, the sitter, Joe White, was a fellow student at the Tiffany Foundation. The original bronze was completed in 1918 and cast at the Roman Bronze Works in New York. This is the second cast, which Porter made at his own foundry in La Mesa in 1928. He later made a third and final cast which he presented to the San Diego Fine Arts Gallery. "Head of a Young Man" was frequently exhibited and illustrated during Porter's life and is probably his best-known work of art. His works are very rare. The bronze is fine, some minor chips in the patina, the marble base is recent.
