HURD, Peter (born 1904)

Painter and illustrator Peter Hurd was born in Roswell, New Mexico and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. A pupil of N.C. Wyeth, Hurd illustrated "The Last of the Mohicans" and "American History" by T.S. Lawler.

MAILLOL, Aristide (1861-1944)

French artist, celebrated for his sculptures , which had wide influence, of the female nude, in which he attempted to continue the tradition of Greek and Roman sculpture, tend ing to be calm and monumental, with a sense of classical dignity. Maillol also made woodcut illustrations for editions of classical and modern poems.

MASSON, André (1896-1987)

French painter, a major contributor to the Surrealist movement. By 1924 he had become a close friend of Breton, Miró and Ernst. Concerned with the spontaneous expression of unconscious mental life, he first improvised "automatic" linear drawings and then began to build up the surfaces of his canvases with randomly applied glue, sand and pigment.
