Russian-born French painter, whose highly individual style brought him much popular success. Between 1910 and 1914 he lived in Paris. Cubist spatial effects affected his style, but he derived his imagery from childhood memories, set in irrational, dreamlike juxtapositions. From this basis he developed his characteristically poetic and exuberant style. Since 1923 he lived in France and the USA, working prolifically not only as a painter, but also as a designer of book illustrations, stage sets and stained-glass windows.
