San Diego Painter
Born in England, in the early 1890s Lester moved from Canada to the US, settling in Pasadena. After having studied at the National Academy of Design, the Art Student's League and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 1894-96, he returned to California where at various times he had studios in Los Angeles, Pasadena, Santa Barbara, Montecito and Redlands. From 1900-02 he traveled and painted in Europe, studying in Munich and Dresden. Known for his atmospheric paintings and ethereal style, Lester, like fellow San Diego artist Maurice Braun, was a life-long Theosophist. From 1907-10 he taught art at the Raja Yoga Schools in Cuba, returning to Point Loma and "Lomaland" in 1916. In 1929 he established a studio in Alpine where he painted in the mountains of that area, and a final studio in Grossmont, California, a small community like Alpine, east of San Diego.

Born in Nevada, Nutting studied at the Boston Museum Fine Arts School, Art Student's League in NYC, and in Paris at Academie Julian and the University of Paris. After moving to Southern California in the 1930s, he was an instructor at the Chouinard Art School in Los Angeles. Painter, muralist, watercolorist, portraitist, among his portraits are those of James and Nora Joyce, Nutting, a Los Angeles artist, paints in an expressionistic style using brilliant colors and bold brush techniques.

POHL, Ernest Henry (1874-1956)
San Diego Painter
Born in Portland, Oregon, Robinson studied at Otis Art Institiute in Los Angeles, and in Paris, 1927-29. From 1931-32 she worked with Diego Rivera on the murals in the Palacio Nacional in Mexico City. She later pursued an art career on the East Coast and assisted Rockwell Kent in illustrating Voltaire's Candide.
