EX058-STUDY OF CLARK (THE LISTENER)
Terracotta
Height: 16 1/2"
Length: 18 1/4"
Depth: 8 3/4"
Date: 1963
Provenance: Statement of authenticity by the model, Dr. Clark W. Brott, former Chief Curator of Museum of Man, San Diego on file.
-Donal seldom ever sculpted directly from a model, preferring to study in clay while finishing pieces in a variety of difficult mediums, especially rosewood, diorite, and bronze. To the best of my knowledge, Donal Hord gave no similar studies to his models when the studies were completed. At my request, Donal, who was also my friend, asked his long-time assistant and comrade Homer Dana to assist in preparing this rather large terra cotta for firing (with no guarantees we would successfully remove the trapped moisture). The project was successful, however; and Donal presented "Study of Clark," or "The Listener" to me in October of 1963. -Clark W. Brott, President, Great Basin Foundation, April 14, 1993, San Diego, California.
