FRANCO NANARTONIS (born 1918)

Born in Bangor, Maine, October 21, 1918 and of Lithuanian, Polish and Ukrainian parentage, Franco Nanartonis studied under scholarships at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. He then served in the military in the Middle East, North Africa and Southern Italy between 1938-1945. He continued to work as artist, teacher and conservator in Maine, Rome, Italy, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. He has resided and exhibited in San Diego since 1990.

Painted at Peirce's home, August-September 1968. Peirce and Nanartonis were fellow Maine artists, both born in Bangor, and remained life-long friends until Pierce's death in 1970.
