LESTER, Leonard (1870-1952) paintings / watercolors

San Diego Painter

Born in England, in the early 1890s Lester moved from Canada to the US, settling in Pasadena. After having studied at the National Academy of Design, the Art Student's League and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 1894-96, he returned to California where at various times he had studios in Los Angeles, Pasadena, Santa Barbara, Montecito and Redlands. From 1900-02 he traveled and painted in Europe, studying in Munich and Dresden. Known for his atmospheric paintings and ethereal style, Lester, like fellow San Diego artist Maurice Braun, was a life-long Theosophist. From 1907-10 he taught art at the Raja Yoga Schools in Cuba, returning to Point Loma and "Lomaland" in 1916. In 1929 he established a studio in Alpine where he painted in the mountains of that area, and a final studio in Grossment, California, a small community like Alpine, east of San Diego.
