MAURICE BRAUN (1877-1941)

Born in Hungary, Braun immigrated with his family to the US in 1881 and settled in NYC. He enrolled in the National Academy of Design in 1897, studied for a year with William M. Chase, establishing himself as a portrait painter in New York before moving to San Diego in 1910, where his impressionist paintings of the Southwest desert, Southern California hills, and High Sierras have brought him great national acclaim. An ardent follower of Theosophy, Braun died in San Diego in 1941.
